Unified Finite Element Discretizations of Coupled Darcy-stokes Flow

چکیده
In this paper we discuss some new finite element methods for flows which are governed by the linear stationary Stokes system on one part of the domain and by a second order elliptic equation derived form Darcy’s law in the rest of the domain, and where the solutions in the two domain are coupled by proper interface conditions. All the methods proposed here utilizes the same finite element spaces on the entire domain. In particular, we show how the coupled problem can be solved by using standard Stokes elements like the MINI element or the Taylor–Hood element in the entire domain. Furthermore, for all the methods the handling of the interface conditions are straightforward.

Finite Element Methods for Saddlepoint Problems with Application to Darcy and Stokes Flow
The goal of this short course is to review the analysis and the systematic discretization of saddlepoint systems that arise in the weak formulation of certain fluid flow problems by Galekrin methods. To demonstrate the applicability of the main arguments in various situations, we consider the slow flow of water through a channel surrounded by a porous aquiver. While the free flow of the fluid m...

We propose and study two second-order in time implicit-explicit (IMEX) methods for the coupled Stokes-Darcy system that governs flows in karst aquifers. The first is a combination of a second-order backward differentiation formula and the second-order Gear’s extrapolation approach. The second is a combination of the second-order Adams-Moulton and second-order Adams-Bashforth methods. Both algor...
متن کاملFinite Element Approximations for Stokes-Darcy Flow with Beavers-Joseph Interface Conditions
Numerical solutions using finite element methods are considered for transient flow in a porous medium coupled to free flow in embedded conduits. Such situations arise, for example, for groundwater flows in karst aquifers. The coupled flow is modeled by the Darcy equation in a porous medium and the Stokes equations in the conduit domain. On the interface between the matrix and conduit, Beavers–J...

متن کاملA posteriori error estimate for the H(div) conforming mixed finite element for the coupled Darcy-Stokes system
An H(div) conforming mixed finite element method has been proposed for the coupled Darcy-Stokes flow in [30], which imposes normal continuity on the velocity field strongly across the Darcy-Stokes interface. Here, we develop an a posteriori error estimator for this H(div) conforming mixed method, and prove its global reliability and efficiency. Due to the strong coupling on the interface, speci...
